Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - Movie Review

Dungeons and Dragons has finally hit the big screen and it is........ fun! This movie is nothing special, but I don't think it needed to be. It offers a fun fantasy adventure that is just really easy to enjoy. Keep in mind, I have never played D&D so if you're a fan take everything I say with a grain of salt, but the consensus I've seen is that those who have and haven't played the game are equally enjoying.
The plot is fairly standard. This team of thieves band together to try stealing something to help them take down a villain and save a loved one. It's basic, but that's fine, there's a reason these kinds of movies keep coming and that's because there will always be an appetite for them. What makes this one a little more noteworthy is the clear passion from the cast and crew. Chris Pine leads the cast and brings his typical charm to carry the film. He's funny, he's witty, and he's the right person to lead this. At his side is Michelle Rodriguez, who may not be bringing acting prowess that'll knock your socks off but acts tough and that's all she needs. Justice Smith is okay, Sophia Lillis is good, Hugh Grant is a great goofy lil villain. Rege-Jean Page has garnered some decent buzz here thanks to his Bridgerton fame but he's the one I didn't really love. His character is very one note and despite being at the forefront of the marketing he really isn't in the film all that much. He isn't bad but I was never impressed by him.
Stylistically this has a very basic look, but gets points in my book for some great practical work. There is a fair share of visual effects, which actually look pretty great for the most part, but there's also a bunch of animatronics and great costumes that really make the world feel more tangible which is something I love. For a movie like this it's also shot fairly well, there are some moments where the composition honestly impressed me a lil bit.
All in all, this offers a fairly basic but immensely charming fantasy adventure. It's got a bit of Lord of the Rings and also some of the wit that people love things like Guardians of the Galaxy for. If you saw the trailer and thought it looked fun, you won't be disappointed.
