Most Anticipated Summer Movies

The weather is getting warmer and the summer movie season is upon us. With that in mind I figured now would be a good time to count down the films I'm most looking forward to in the coming months. I want to get some things out of the way first. First of all, this is not a list ranking how good I think these films will be, while expected quality is in some cases a factor, this will be ranked by how excited I'll be before watching each one. And secondly this will specifically include films set to be released between the beginning of May and the end of August. Also note that I might not watch all of these, if I hear one is awful and my anticipation drops (just like what happened to Suburbicon in my anticipated fall movies a few months ago) I probably won't care to see them anymore. I have fifteen ranked entries for this list as well as some fun honourable mentions, so lets get into it.

Honourable Mentions
Tag- In most cases a cheesy studio comedy wouldn't have me remotely excited. This year however seems to be the year of surprisingly good studio comedies such as Game Night and Blockers. Tag will likely be nothing special, but it looks quite fun. It has a hilarious ensemble cast and a cool premise and while my expectations aren't high I'm looking forward to seeing it and having a good time.
Won't you be my Neighbour?- I was never the biggest fan of Mr Rogers Neighbourhood growing up, and this typically wouldn't get me excited. However, I saw the trailer for this before a movie and it looks incredibly heartwarming and I'm looking quite forward to seeing it.
The Meg- This movie looks like shit, absolute shit, and I'm so excited for it. Shark movies will always be special, and are arguably more special when they're bad and cheesy, and arguably even more special when the shark is a 70ft long prehistoric shark being fought by Jason Statham. This movie has almost no chance of being good and I can't wait to stuff my mouth full of popcorn and have a blast laughing at it.

Now onto the fifteen I'm most excited for...

#15- Ocean's 8
The first trailer for this film didn't impress me at all, the second one caught my attention more, but the quality of the franchises second film may be what has me the most hesitant. I love Ocean's Eleven but I hate Ocean's Twelve with a passion. Ocean's 8 looks to be enough of a fun ride that I can see myself enjoying it quite a bit, so here's hoping it takes the route of the original and not its successor.

#14- Hotel Artemis
I hadn't heard of this film until its trailer dropped recently, and I'm pretty intrigued. The premise seems to lend itself to some solid action, and the ensemble cast is nothing short of fantastic. The style feels as though it'll either work really well or will fall flat, I'm certainly hoping for the former. At this point I'll watch just about anything with Jeff Goldblum and I look forward to seeing him and the rest of the great cast in this film.

#13- The Tale
From what I've heard coming out of the Sundance film festival this is a film to watch out for. It currently sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 9.3/10, which is pretty impressive despite the low number of reviews. The trailer didn't necessarily hook me, but the positive word of mouth and what looks to be a very strong performance by Laura Dern have me in eager anticipation.

#12- Under the Silver Lake
Under the Silver Lake is directed by the man that brought us It Follows. I have to be honest, I wasn't a big fan of that movie, but the general tone of it I found very strong and this film feels to have it as well. The story seems very compelling and Andrew Garfield is on quite a hot streak so I look forward to seeing what he brings to this film. I'm also impressed with what Riley Keough has been doing recently especially in Logan Lucky, here's hoping this film helps to put her on the map.

#11- Eighth Grade
This is one of the highest rated films on Letterboxd right now, and it's directed by Bo Burnham? While seeing that was a bit shocking to me I can't wait to see this film. I'm a sucker for a good coming of age comedy and based on the buzz this film has received it seems as though Burnham has quite a knack for directing. The trailer didn't hook me but the film is produced by A24, the company that knows how to make the best films with the worst promotional material, so a mediocre trailer doesn't worry me.

#10- Sorry to Bother you
I just got around to watching the trailer for this film a day or so ago and I'm very intrigued. This film seems very out there and very funny and after seeing Lakeith Stanfield in Get Out I've been wanting to see him in more. The reviews for the film so far aren't great but they're good enough to have me excited. Here's hoping that Sorry to Bother You is one of the standouts of the summer.

#9- American Animals
I don't know what it is about this film but I am very excited. The cast features several young up and coming actors and the film has a very fun style to it. If it manages to be as good of a time as it looks I'd say we're going to be in for quite a treat. This film also premiered at Sundance to quite good reviews and the trailer is one of the ones I've enjoyed most recently so this is a film I can't wait to see.

#8- Incredibles 2
I feel like some people will get mad for me only having this at number eight so lets make something clear, I am excited for this movie, quite excited. I can't put it too high though for two reasons. The first is that the original isn't a huge part of my childhood like it is for many, I'm a much bigger fan of other Pixar films. The second reason is that the promotional material aside from a few posters has disappointed me. I'm excited to see this film but there are other movies that I'd choose to see over it.

#7- Ant-Man and the Wasp
Ant-Man was a film I surprisingly really enjoyed, so I'm excited for the second installment. The trailers have had moments that I've been a fan of and some I haven't, but the overall tone seems to fit what I want from the film. I really love the newest poster and I can't wait to see Evangeline Lilly in a bigger role. This is also the first film post- Infinity War in the MCU so I look forward to seeing the aftermath.

#6- Hereditary
This movie has already impressed me as I haven't seen it yet and it already terrifies me. The trailer is weird in the creepiest of ways and the buzz the film has received from festivals so far is more than enough to get me really excited. If everything I've read is true this will be one of if not the scariest movie of the year. I'll probably be shitting my pants before seeing this but I can't wait for it.

#5- Sicario: Day of the Soldado
The first Sicario is a film that has had a big part in me getting into film, so I'm super excited for the sequel. That excitement is cautious excitement however, as Denis Villeneuve and Roger Deakins are not part of this film, and are the main reasons the first is so great. The trailers have their strong moments but also some that look too much like an action movie while the original is more of a crime drama. We'll have to wait and see how this film turns out but I'll be excited to see it no matter what.

#4- Solo: A Star Wars Story
I hate the title of the film, and I think there are way more interesting stories to tell in this universe, and yet I still can't wait to see it. I've been a doubter from the start and especially after the firing of Phil Lord and Chris Miller from the directing position, but from the moment the first trailer dropped my excitement has been growing. Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover seem like the perfect people to play a young Han and Lando and the addition of Woody Harrelson in anything gets me excited. This seems like it may be the most fun film in the Star Wars universe and I'm really looking forward to checking it out.

#3- Deadpool 2
While I've enjoyed the first Deadpool less with each watch it is still a hilarious and refreshing take on the superhero genre. Now we will get more of that self referential humour in a sequel that looks to build on a strong predecessor. The marketing has been great, the cast looks great, and anything with Josh Brolin this year seems to have my attention. Can't wait to see this.

#2- Mission Impossible: Fallout
This franchise spent so long not exciting me with its marketing, but then kept delivering awesome action movies. This time I'm buying in early, because this looks like it'll be a sure highlight of the summer. The trailer is one of my favourites in recent memory, making me like Imagine Dragons again (which is saying a lot cause I boycotted them after the Riverdale season one ending). With this franchise I want a cool spy thriller with some awesome stunts and action set pieces, and it looks like that's exactly what we're getting. Also, Michelle Monaghan is back, and that's a win.

#1- Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
There was really no other film that could be number one for me. Let's get something clear, I doubt this will be my favourite of the year, I don't even know if it'll be good. The trailers haven't done much for me and I'm not a big fan of some of the cast. That being said I have loads of faith in JA Bayona's direction and I hope to see some interesting things we haven't seen from the franchise before. Jurassic Park is my favourite movie so any entry in the franchise will get me excited, and while I can't wait for most of the movies on here, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is the only one I've been actively planning out how and when I'm going to see it months in advance. I can't wait.
