Next up in my Best of 2017 series is my favourite original scripts of the year. In this list I'll be focusing not on the films as a whole but how well they are written. As with my last list there are some films I missed so if you think there should be something on here that isn't, there's a good chance I just haven't gotten around to seeing it. Without further adieu, here are my favourite original screenplays of 2017.
Honorable Mentions:
Good Time
This is a very good film and part of that is due to the writing. It is a script that portrays its tough situation with a truthful feeling to it. The script is only enhanced by how well the cast brings it to life.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
The dialogue in this film feels awkward in a way but the very matter of fact nature of it fits the film's style perfectly. The script's references to Greek mythology are also very clever so I'd say this is definitely one of the most interesting scripts of the year.
#10- Detroit
This is a very good film and the script it brought to life is quite impressive. Most of the film takes place over one night at the Algiers Motel, but the moments before the motel do a great job of giving the audience enough development of its key characters to become invested in them.
#9- Wind River
Taylor Sheridan knows how to write great dialogue. The conversations in this film are some of the most emotional of the year and the way the film's story is told is clever and original. Taylor Sheridan is a phenomenal writer and this is up there with his best.
#8- Logan Lucky
This movie is wildly underrated as it is easily one of 2017's funniest films. The humour and dialogue perfectly fit the redneck world the film brings to life and the characters are developed well and hilariously written. There is one scene in particular regarding Game of Thrones that had me falling off of my seat laughing.
#7- Coco
This is such a touching story and I absolutely loved it. This script gives its protagonist a clear goal and motivation and has some twists and turns that are surprisingly unexpected. The film also does some things to provoke emotion that were very clever.
#6- Baby Driver
Everyone knows that I love this movie, and Edgar Wright's script is the beginning of all the magic. While the script itself isn't what makes the film so great, it still has some great writing in it, giving very satisfying emotion and comedy to go with the fun action.
#5- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Martin McDonagh's script for this film is fantastic. As I said in my top directors post, he does a great job of dealing with very touchy and controversial subject matter with a blend of comedy and seriousness. This script fits his style very well and made for a great film that took a lot of interesting turns.
#4- The Shape of Water
The story this film portrays is beautiful. I think this film succeeds very well in being able to use clever and thoughtful dialogue despite having none from its main protagonist. Every key character is developed well and any moment I was unsure of how the story was unfolding something happened that made me understand everything and become fully involved.
#3- The Big Sick
I love this movie, and that is mostly because of the script. This film is written by real life couple Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon and gives audiences a dramatized version of how their relationship came to be. It is a touching story that gives a surprising amount of insight into the lives of American immigrants. It also has some of the funniest moments of the year.
#2- Get Out
Another movie I absolutely love, Jordan Peele has created what is in my eyes a masterpiece. Every character is well written and the way the story plays out leaves surprises all the way until the very end. This film has shown that it will be talked about for a long time and a lot of its credibility goes towards its script.
#1- Lady Bird
This film is so well written it didn't feel like I was in a movie. It felt like I was legitimately living with all of the incredible characters Greta Gerwig created and I'll be honest I got a little sad when the film ended. The script is full of true emotion and hilarious dialogue and makes you fall in love with most of the main characters from start to finish.
