I guess this isn't the best of 2017, because this will be discussing movies I was very excited for that ended up really disappointing me. Just as a heads up, these aren't necessarily movies I didn't enjoy, some of them I still liked quite a bit, but these are movies that didn't live up to the excitement I had for them. Anyways here we go with my top 10 disappointments of 2017.
Honourable Mentions
Life- This is by no means a movie I disliked, I had a really good time watching it. That being said, I heard some great things from the South by Southwest festival and it looked like it could be an Alien-esque space-thriller. This is not an example of a bad movie it's mostly just an example of me having enormous hopes for a movie that ended up just being pretty good.
Justice League- This movie doesn't quite make the list because I enjoyed it a fair bit. I also wasn't over the moon excited because of DC's track record. I had fun with this movie but it really doesn't make the most of its source material. It could be amazing but was just okay so it takes an honourable mention spot.
#10- Alien: Covenant
My hopes for this film were through the roof, and I do enjoy it more than most. The reason this film makes this list is that if it focused more on certain things it could be an incredible movie. It just focuses too heavily on the elements people were mixed on from Prometheus when it just needed to be a horror movie where an alien kills people. It is a movie I like a fair amount but also a movie I wanted to absolutely love.
#9- Fate of the Furious
Another movie I enjoy quite a bit. Another movie that didn't meet the standards I had for it. I grew up on the Fast and Furious movies and the recent ones have thoroughly impressed me. This film just does too much trying to up the last film and it gets a little too ridiculous in some parts. I liked this movie and I love this franchise but it just didn't impress me as much as I wanted it to.
#8- Beauty and the Beast
This is a movie I really liked at first, but as I've thought of its issues more it's become more of a disappointment. "Be our guest" is my favourite song from the original and it is butchered with really terrible sound editing. There are issues like that which shouldn't be there in a film with this high of a budget. I know I'm pissing off the hardcore Disney fans that were overwhelmed by this movie's existence but it has a lot of flaws. I enjoyed it, but it could've been so much more.
#7- Battle of the Sexes
Emma Stone's post- Academy award win film is decent, but I was beyond excited. This is a fun sport bio-pic and tells an interesting story but it just doesn't have the best execution. Stone is great but the rest of the cast is just okay. This is a solid film but one that I thought was going to be heavy in Oscar contention.
#6- Atomic Blonde
This movie has quite a bit going for it stylistically. David Leitch has some great directing when it comes to action and the world he creates in the film is actually really cool. Unfortunately the storytelling is flawed. There are a lot of times where I didn't understand what was happening because the film doesn't explain itself very well. The music either works fantastically or not at all, and anytime I heard 99 Luftballons after seeing this film I wanted to punch something. Decent but pretty disappointing.
#5- The Great Wall
Matt Damon is one of my favourite actors. What the fuck is he doing in this movie? Damon gets me excited for anything, but this movie is just horrid. Willem Dafoe literally just disappears halfway through, Matt Damon's accent changes every couple of minutes, and no actors are really any good. It's a terrible use of mythology and an overall trash film. That being said I was hesitant before watching so I wasn't too too disappointed.
#4- Murder on the Orient Express
I was so excited for this movie, to the point where I thought it might be one of my favs of the year. There are some great things about this movie and it is very creative, but the storytelling is pretty weak. The cast is for the most part good except for Michelle Pfieffer.b
#3- The Dark Tower
What a waste of potential. This movie isn't horrible, but it just feels as though it doesn't matter. This is a story that could have filled a season of television but it is instead rushed through 90-minutes of underdeveloped mess. From what I've heard, this is some great source material so its a shame it turned out so bad and unmemorable.
#2- The Mummy
I'll admit, this movie didn't look amazing. That being said I thought the idea of a cinematic universe featuring some of the most iconic movie monsters would be a lot of fun. This movie also came out right around my birthday so I thought it might be a fun way to celebrate. While this movie has some fun elements they mostly reside in the "so bad its fun" category. A lot of the acting and dialogue is pretty garbage and the film fails to create the franchise it was aiming for.
#1- The Snowman
What a pile of shit. I love serial killer movies, I love Michael Fassbender, and I've heard great things about this director. The trailers for this movie excited me so much I almost bought the book. I'm glad I didn't because I hate this movie. It fails on basic things like tolerable CGI, and there is one scene where a green screen is so obvious it looks like this film was made in the 60s. Not to mention, Val Kilmer is in the movie but dubbed over so badly the lines clearly don't match up with his mouthThe story is riddled with plot lines that don't matter, prime talent is wasted, and somehow the ending is even worse than the rest of this messy shitastrophe. This isn't even so bad its good, because this film is depressing as all hell. You just get hit over the head with the main character's alcoholism, which is something that I can't stand in movies, and the overall tone is just bland and depressing. While that tone works beautifully in some films, it doesn't work at all here and just makes for a horrible time watching. This is the definition of a brutal disappointment and I hated pretty much every second of it.
