Best of 2017- Best Music

In this next entry of my Best of 2017 series I'm going to be discussing my Top 10 movies of the year in terms of music. This list has no specifications it includes original scores, adapted scores, and soundtracks compiled of popular songs. This is just the top 10 movies that I thought used music to the best of their ability.

Honourable Mentions:
Get Out
This almost made the list but just misses out due what in my opinion has been a strong year in terms of scores and soundtracks. The score builds the tension and unsettling tone of the film and is definitely very well done.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Similar to Get Out, this film has a score that sets itself apart from other thrillers, but still excels in building tension. Another great score that just misses out on this list.
Beauty and the Beast
This probably should be in the Top 10 but I've left it out for two reasons. First of all, it doesn't really build much on the original in this regard, as most of the songs are just rehashed from the original and performed by someone new. The second reason is that I think that a lot of the songs were done worse than in the original, for example my favourite song from the original "Be Our Guest" was massacred by terrible sound editing. Still a very good soundtrack but could've been better.

#10- Wonder Woman
I'll be honest this score isn't quite as memorable as I thought it was, and I almost left it off of the list. Luckily for Wonder Woman though, the theme from this movie is absolutely fantastic so I'm okay with the rest of the score being less memorable.

#9- Good Time
This is a really cool score. This film is a fast paced thriller and the score reflects that really well. It isn't as memorable as it needs to be to move up this list but it still takes a spot.

#8- War for the Planet of the Apes
This film has one of those scores that is slow but grand, and I think it works perfectly. This score had to be slower to fit the tone of the film and had to be grand enough to bring this trilogy to a grand close. Overall one of my favourite scores of the year.

#7- Dunkirk
Any time Hans Zimmer collaborates with Christopher Nolan there's a 99% chance that it will be one of the year's best scores. This score perfectly fits the grand war epic it plays over and it was easily one of my favourite parts of the film.

#6- Coco
Being based around music this film had to make it on this list. The song "Remember Me" that is played throughout the film is absolutely beautiful and the rest of the songs accompanying it are also quite good. A great film with a great soundtrack.

#5- Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Is it the best of the Star Wars scores? Nah. But its freaking Star Wars! You get your renditions of the classic themes as well as the newer ones which are all great. Kylo Ren's theme is becoming one of the best out there and just enhances him even further as a villain. I will pretty much love anything John Williams does and this is no exception.

#4- The Shape of Water
The music in this film is really beautiful, like reaaaaally beautiful. It is only made better by how well it suits the setting of the film. It takes a musical style that suits the Cold War period but sticks to more fantastical elements. Great music accompanying a great film.

#3- The Greatest Showman
If you read my review of this film you would know how much I love its soundtrack. The songs transcend the qualities of a musical and are just really great songs. I've been listening to the soundtrack since I saw the film and that likely won't change anytime soon.

#2- Blade Runner 2049
Another Hans Zimmer project that turned out absolutely brilliantly. This film's score is basically perfect. It adds to the tone of the film and establishes it as its own while giving call backs to the original. Zimmer is brilliant and this is one of my favourite scores of his.

#1- Baby Driver
No other movie could take the top spot in a music list. This film lives and dies on its soundtrack which I listen to constantly. Everything is so perfectly timed to the music that when listening to the soundtrack you can almost recreate the film in your head. This may just be my favourite soundtrack of all time and no doubt takes the top spot.
