Weekend Box Office Report- Nov. 3rd

I hope everyone a great weekend. I know a few people in particular that had a great one, everybody involved in Thor: Ragnarok. Obviously Thor took the top spot, but where did all the other movies land? Keep reading to find out.

The Top 5
#1- Thor: Ragnarok
Week #: 1
Weekend Gross: $ 122,744,989
Total Domestic Gross: $ 122,744,989
Theatre Count: 4,080
Weekend to Weekend: N/A
Anyone that bet against this movie this weekend is out of their mind. The huge level of buzz and anticipation made this one of the most successful opening weekends of the year and with the positive word of mouth surrounding the film I'd expect we see it hold on to some solid cash for quite some time. I took the top spot with ease this weekend and will likely do the same next weekend

#2- A Bad Moms Christmas
Week #: 1
Weekend Gross: $ 16,759,161
Total Domestic Gross: $ 21,285,267
Theatre Count: 3,615
Weekend to Weekend: N/A
The first Bad Moms was a surprise hit, making back its budget in its opening weekend, and being a surprisingly good comedy. While it didn't manage to hit the opening mark its predecessor did, A Bad Moms Christmas still landed a solid opening especially considering the competition it faced. I think if this film were to come out closer to Christmas time it might have found more success but it still managed to fare well and take the second spot. It also raked in another 4-5 million dollars before the weekend due to its Wednesday release.

 #3- Jigsaw
Week #: 2
Weekend Gross: $ 6,558,146
Total Domestic Gross: $ 28,694,617
Theatre Count: 2,941
Weekend to Weekend: -60.6%
While Jigsaw did take a pretty huge drop, it still managed to hold on a lot better than I expected it to. I figured Thor would pretty much knock it out but I guess some buzz and a lack of strong horror movies out right now managed to keep it afloat. With a lot of fun movies coming out this weekend Jigsaw will likely drop from the top 5 but it has already made almost three times its budget so I'd say it has had a solid run.

#4- Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween
Week #: 3
Weekend Gross: $ 4,541,190
Total Domestic Gross: $ 42,849, 613
Theatre Count: 2,202
Weekend to Weekend: -54.8%
These movies seem to have some weird box office magic as this film is nearing 50 million dollars domestically despite a rotten tomatoes percentage below 10%. I can't discredit this movie as much as I'd like to because even a week after Halloween it managed to take a spot in the top 5. So I guess all there is to say is... good job Tyler Perry?

#5- Geostorm
Week #: 3
Weekend Gross: $ 3,194,031
Total Domestic Gross: $ 28,929,372
Theatre Count: 2,666
Weekend to Weekend: -45.9%
How this movie managed to drop less than 50% from last weekend baffles me. Here's hoping this is the last we see of this nonsense in the Top 5 so I can focus on movies that deserve to be talked about. This movie will not come close to making its budget back, it looks dumb as hell, go see Thor instead.

Outside the Top 5

#6- Happy Death Day
Week #: 4
Weekend Gross: $ 2,699,715
Total Domestic Gross: $ 52,853,220
Theatre Count: 2,184
Weekend to Weekend: -46.8%
This movie almost took the fifth spot and I wish it did, because Geostorm should not be making money. Luckily, Happy Death Day has managed to hit the 50 million dollar mark due to overall positive word of mouth. Blumhouse knows how to make successful low budget movies and I can't wait to see what the future has for this studio.

#26- Lady Bird
Week #: 1
Weekend Gross: $ 364,437
Total Domestic Gross: $ 364,437
Theatre Count: 4
Weekend to Weekend: N/A
While the total is by no means high, Lady Bird's per-screen average is far above the competition at around 90 thousand, due to its low theatre count. This is a movie I'm really interested in seeing, so I hope we see a large boost in theatres.

#33- The Snowman
Week #: 3
Weekend Gross: $ 167,685
Total Domestic Gross: $ 6,540,965
Theatre Count: 524
Weekend to Weekend: -86.2%
While Lady Bird averaged almost a six digit number per theatre, The Snowman made an average of about $320. I'm glad people are steering clear of this bland, poorly made, and frankly upsetting movie. Also I know the #33 movie isn't one that is interesting to talk about but I really don't like this movie so I enjoy shitting on it.
