Thor: Ragnarok is the newest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is the third Thor film we have seen so far. The first two Thor movies are typically regarded as some of the weaker MCU films, and while I enjoy the first one quite a bit, The Dark World holds the honour of having one of the most forgettable villains in the franchise. Luckily, Thor: Ragnarok more than exceeds the first two movies and is one of the most fun movies of the year.
In this movie, the goddess of death Hela has taken over Asgard, smashed Thor's hammer, and sent Thor tumbling onto a random planet resembling a landfill where he is captured and turned into a gladiator style fighter. He then must escape the planet and try to save his home. That's all I'm going to say plot wise because you should go into this movie with as little plot knowledge as you can and watch everything unfold onscreen.
This is easily the best turn for Chris Hemsworth as Thor. His character traits have been used in rather boring ways in the past but in this film he is absolutely hilarious. He also shows a surprising amount of grit and emotion in some scenes and I thought he was very good. Tom Hiddleston once again plays Loki in this film and while his character is basically the same as in every other film, he as always turns in a solid performance. While Mark Ruffalo mostly plays Hulk, he still does a great job. The buddy-cop vibe between both Thor and Hulk, and Thor and Bruce Banner makes for some incredible comedy and gives the movie a vibe the Marvel Universe hasn't felt before. This film also introduces us to the great Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. While this character could be an easily written off side character, like pretty much every side character from the first two films, but she instead puts herself in the ranks of strong female characters Marvel is working to build up. As I said before, Thor: The Dark World gave one of the most forgettable and boring villains in a superhero movie. I don't think this movie has that problem at all. Cate Blanchett as Hela is phenomenal, being one of the few villains we've seen that can match the hero both mentally and physically. She kicks ass left and right and proves to be a deadly foe for Thor, making the audience fear for what may happen to their favourite characters. Oh, Jeff Goldblum is also in this movie. He's weird, he's funny, and he fits the world he's in amazingly, so as always, well done Goldblum.
While this is a loaded cast, with other great talents beyond the ones I've mentioned, the star of this movie is director Taika Waititi. The first two Thor movies can be bland, while this movie is beyond fun. The writers injected this movie with a ton of hilarious dialogue and Waititi's goofy style takes that dialogue and turns it into cinematic gold. The action can be a little CGI-heavy for me, but it is still well directed and easy to follow. There are also some action scenes shot so well it makes up for that, especially one scene where Hela starts fighting. This is also one of the prettier movies in the MCU. I was worried the bright colours might be too much for me but the creative team uses those colours very well when necessary to contrast some of the darker moments of the film.
This movie can be summed up pretty well in three letters: F-U-N. This movie is hilarious, action packed, and full of surprises guaranteed to bring laughs out of the audiences. This is one of the best times I've had at the movies this year and I'd more than suggest you check this movie out.
