Box Office Report- Nov. 17th

I don't know if any of you have heard of the Justice League, but they're apparently pretty famous and now they have their own movie that came out this weekend. We also saw the release of what looks to be this month's tear jerker Wonder. But where did these films land at the box office? Keep reading to find out.

The Top 5
#1- Justice League
Week #: 1
Weekend Gross: $ 96,000,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 96,000,000
Theatre Count: 4,051
Weekend to Weekend: N/A
While 96 million dollars is nothing to scoff at, there is no way Warner Bros can call this a strong success. Despite a worse critical reception, Batman vs Superman opened with over 160 million dollars. This film is just showing that casual movie fans are growing tired of the mediocrity that has plagued every film in this franchise other than Wonder Woman. While I personally enjoyed Justice League, it is riddled with flaws and most critics ended up disliking the movie. If DC can't get it together and start making more high quality movies we may see this franchise meet its end.

#2- Wonder
Week #: 1
Weekend Gross: $ 27,050,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 27,050,000
Theatre Count: 3,096
Weekend to Weekend: N/A
This is probably the big surprise of the weekend to me. While Wonder is based on a popular book, I just didn't think there was a lot of anticipation going towards this film. But a very positive critical reception and love of the book has led to a very good opening weekend. I've heard great things about this movie and I hope to check it out at some point.

#3- Thor: Ragnarok
Week #: 3
Weekend Gross: $ 21,786,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 247,382,170
Theatre Count: 4,080
Weekend to Weekend: -61.8%
It took a bigger drop than it did last weekend, but with Justice League coming out it was inevitable. Thor still managed to bring in a good chunk of cash despite being in its third weekend of release and going up against another huge superhero movie. This just goes to show that if you make a really good movie people will go spend their money on that. This movie will likely hit 250 million domestically this week and just continues to rake in money.

#4- Daddy's Home 2
Week #: 2
Weekend Gross: $ 14,800,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 50,576,447
Theatre Count: 3,575
Weekend to Weekend: -50.1%
The fact that this movie only dropped 50% baffles me. The fact that this movie has already hit 50 million dollars domestically  also baffles me. This movie looks dumb as hell and I honestly have no idea why people are going to see it, but they are, and it took the fourth spot at the box office.

#5- Murder on the Orient Express
Week #: 2
Weekend Gross: $ 13,800,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 51,728,362
Theatre Count: 3,354
Weekend to Weekend: -51.9%
While anyone that read my review knows I didn't love this movie, I'm still glad to see it doing well because I appreciate a lot of what Kenneth Branagh was trying to do with this adaptation. The movie has now crossed 50 million dollars domestically and with a solid international total it has already made almost three times its budget back. Hopefully this film will do well enough to earn a sequel because I want to see this story continue.

Outside the Top 5

#6- The Star
Week #: 1
Weekend Gross: $ 10,000,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 10,000,000
Theatre Count: 2,837
Weekend to Weekend: N/A
This movie had very little buzz going into this weekend, which is why its 10 million dollar opening very much surprised me. I can't speak on how good it is, but it has a fairly low budget that it will likely make back without a problem. While it didn't crack the top 5 I'm surprised it landed as high as it did.

#8- Lady Bird
Week #: 3
Weekend Gross: $ 2,529,915
Total Domestic Gross: $ 4,702,390
Theatre Count: 238
Weekend to Weekend: +110.9%
I need to see this movie. The critical reception this film has received is phenomenal so I am just eagerly waiting for it to come to a theatre anywhere close to me. It will likely see another jump in theatres next weekend, and with that another jump in box office returns.

#9- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Week #: 2
Weekend Gross: $ 1,115,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 1,549,225
Theatre Count: 53
Weekend to Weekend: +246.1%
Much like Lady Bird, this film keeps adding theatres and proving how much people want to see it. Unlike Lady Bird however, I will hopefully be able to see Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri this weekend or the weekend after. This movie looks incredible and I cannot wait to see it.
