Weekend Box Office Report- Oct. 20th

I felt the need to add something to my site, and I decided a weekly box office report would be fun to do. I'm first going to touch on the top 5 films at the weekend's box office, followed by some outside of the top 5 that I think are interesting. So without further ado, here is the weekend box office report for the October 20th weekend.
The Top 5

#1- Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween
Week #: 1
Weekend Gross: $ 21,650,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 21,650,000
Theatre Count: 2,388
Weekend to Weekend: N/A
This isn't a big surprise as the first Boo! spent its first two weekends at number one. There also wasn't really any other Halloween centered movie released this weekend, or any highly anticipated movies. While it will likely take a large drop from weekend one to two, Boo 2! has already almost made its budget back domestically and will end up being quite successful.

#2- Geostorm
Week #: 1
Weekend Gross: $ 13,300,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 13,300,000
Theatre Count: 3,246
Weekend to Weekend: N/A
I'll be honest I'm surprised this many people saw Geostorm this weekend. This movie looks absolutely terrible and the fact that it opened in the second spot just goes to show that some people just really like stupid disaster movies. I can almost guarantee this movie will have a big drop and it will likely rely on the international box office to make back its budget.

#3- Happy Death Day
Week #: 2
Weekend Gross: $ 9,375,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 40,683,365
Theatre Count: 3,298
Weekend to Weekend: -64%
Happy Death Day was a big surprise making over 26 million dollars last weekend. While adding theatres couldn't stop it from taking a big drop, this film still marks yet another hit for Blumhouse, arguably the top studio for horror nowadays. Hopefully this film can hold on leading up to Halloween and reach 50 million dollars domestically.

#4- Blade Runner 2049
Week #: 3
Weekend Gross: $ 7,155,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 74,005,203
Theatre Count: 3,203
Weekend to Weekend: -53.8%
People need to go see this movie before it leaves theatres. Blade Runner 2049 is easily one of the best films and cinematic experiences of the year and the fact that it might not his the $100 million mark domestically is insulting to the brilliance of this film. Here's hoping it can take less of a drop as its theatrical run continues and maybe we will see a third Blade Runner film in a couple decades.

#5- Only the Brave
Week #: 1
Weekend Gross: $ 6,010,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 6,010,000
Theatre Count: 2,577
Weekend to Weekend: N/A
Only the Brave surprisingly takes the last spot in the top five this weekend. While I haven't had a chance to see it yet it looks very inspiring and I'm glad it managed to make some money. Unfortunately with not a lot of Halloween season appeal I'd expect to see a big drop going into weekend two, there is the chance that word of mouth could give this film some staying power.

Outside the Top 5

#7- It
Week #: 7
Weekend Gross: $ 3,500,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 320,234,616
Theatre Count: 2,560
Weekend to Weekend: -42.2%
I expected It to be quite successful, but to still be hanging on in the top 10 almost two months into its release is amazing. It took yet another below 50% drop and with Halloween around the corner I wouldn't expect it to lose many theatres next weekend. I think it may top out at around $340 million domestically but that is a beyond impressive haul.

#8- The Snowman
Week #: 1
Weekend Gross: $ 3,442,000
Total Domestic Gross: $ 3,442,000
Theatre Count: 1,812
Weekend to Weekend: N/A
This movie got a lot less theatres than I thought it would, so did everyone except me know this movie was going to suck? Even with the low theatre count and garbage reviews surrounding it, I'm surprised The Snowman's marketing campaign couldn't bump it into the top 5. This movie will have little to no staying power as the word of mouth is garbage, so it will probably burn out very quickly.

#26- Breathe
Week #: 2
Weekend Gross: $ 155,925
Total Domestic Gross: $187,718
Theatre Count: 315
Weekend to Weekend: +599.7%
I figured I'd mention this movie as I hope it continues to gain theatres and money. This looks like a great inspirational film that I'd love to see gain awards season buzz as well as economic buzz. I don't know what its theatre count for the future is looking like but I hope to see it soon.
