I'm going to start things out today with an apology. My review for this movie could've been up last weekend when a bunch of my friends wanted to go watch It, but I wimped out and didn't go. I wasn't actually planning on seeing it in theatres since everyone I know that saw it said it was terrifying. But then today, I was ready to see Darren Aronofsky's new film, mother!, but then I was harassed into going to see It. So instead of seeing the cool Jennifer Lawrence movie I was looking forward to, my friends got me into It, and I'm really glad they did.
It is the newest rendition of Stephen King's classic novel and follows a group of kids that are tormented by a demonic clown named Pennywise. They are forced to deal with Pennywise and all his terrifying tricks as well as a group of dangerous bullies, all while no adult believes them or sees the creepiness going on.
The first thing I want to make note of is how amazing each of the kids in this movie are. The group has an amazing bond, shown constantly by what they're willing to go through for one another. Each one is also developed fairly well. Pennywise uses their fears against them and we are shown what scares them very early on. All of these young characters are portrayed beautifully by their actors. Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan, and Wyatt Oleff, congrats to all of you for your great work. I also can't talk about this movie without mentioning Bill Skarsgard and his amazing performance as Pennywise. Even when he isn't doing anything scary he has a creepy vibe that gets under your skin at all times. He is also completely unrecognizable in the role, which just adds to how great of a job he did.
The story is very well told all throughout. As I said earlier, the film does a really good job of introducing the characters, the situations they're in, and the things that scare them most. There are no parts of the film that drag in my opinion, which is something I always appreciate a lot in a movie. The opening scene grabs you right away and the story stays exciting and riveting throughout.
Now onto what everyone is going to see It for, the scares. This is probably the most fun horror movie I've seen in a long time. I wouldn't suggest seeing it alone as it is loads of fun if you're there with friends. There are lots of quick jump scares, which would usually piss me off, but the tension and build up to them make them fun and satisfying. Most of the scares were followed by a laugh from either me or someone else, which made the experience really great. Director Andy Muschetti does a truly great job of creating the tension in scary scenes as well as giving each character time to shine.
One thing I think would improve the movie is a bit more tension. While a lot of the tension is solid, it isn't enough to make the film stick with me a lot. I enjoy a horror/thriller movie that will keep me up at night and stay on my mind all day and I unfortunately just don't think this is one of those.
While I won't be stressing out about Pennywise much, I can't deny that I had a ton of fun with this movie and I'm thoroughly glad I saw it, even if at times it scared the shIT out of me. So if you're a horror fan, or you want a fun night with friends, check out It.
