With the fall movie season approaching I thought today would be a good day to look back at what I thought were the top movies of the summer. Whether they're well crafted films based on true stories, or fun blockbusters, there were a lot of great movies to choose from.
First off there are a few movies I wanted to see that I haven't gotten a chance to. Logan Lucky, and The Hitman's Bodyguard both just came out and I was unable to see them. While it hasn't been well-reviewed I was still interested in checking out The Dark Tower. Despicable Me 3, Cars 3, and Pirates of the Caribbean 5 were all released during times I was busy so I haven't been able to see them yet. Finally Taylor Sheridan's Wind River is a movie I can't wait to watch but I haven't found a theatre near me playing it yet.
I'm going to start things off with one honourable mention. Girl's Trip was a lot of fun, and packed with a lot of heart. Unfortunately I just didn't quite find it as good as the movie in the #9 spot
#9- Alien: Covenant
Alien: Covenant definitely has its issues. It dives too deep into the deep questions first asked in Prometheus despite trailers making it seem much more like a traditional Alien film. The characters are also very underdeveloped making it hard to get invested in all of them. With those flaws in mind, this movie is still a visual masterpiece and the scenes tailored more to horror are all amazing. Being one of the most beautiful movies of the year gives it a spot in the Top 9.
#8- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
I'm surprised this movie is so low considering how excited I was after seeing it in theatres. That just goes to show you how strong this summer was. In my opinion this movie is more fun than the original although the soundtrack might not quite be as stellar. The performances from everyone in the first film are all stellar and the addition of Kurt Russel is amazing.
#7- Wonder Woman
Here's another movie I thought would be way higher but here it is in seventh place. Wonder Woman is not only a great movie, but an important movie for what it has done for women in film. As I said in my first Top 9 list, Gal Gadot is amazing as this character. This movie also has the credibility as being the only widely enjoyed DCEU film and the only one I have enjoyed so far.
#6- Spider-Man: Homecoming
This is in my opinion the best incarnation of Spider-Man we've gotten. Tom Holland was great in the role and the movie was boatloads of fun. The villain is great, the comedy is great, the action is great, it's just an all around great movie. While there were some issues I had casting wise I still had a great time with this movie and I can't wait to see more of Tom Holland within the MCU.
#5- Dunkirk
Does this film offer much character development? No. Does its non-linear style cause for some confusing jumping around from scene to scene? Yes. However this movie shows some incredibly realistic depictions of war that will have the audience on the edge of their seats. An A-list cast highlights this incredible film by Christopher Nolan. While this is by no means his best work it is still an incredible movie.
#4- Detroit
Kathryn Bigelow's newest film is very intense and has great performances all throughout. I found the story this movie told very compelling as instead of following the Detroit riots as a whole, it follows one group of people being treated poorly by police. I don't know why but this movie really connected with me and ended up being one of my favourites of the summer. I'm not a big fan of the ending but it's still an amazing film.
#3- The Big Sick
If anyone hasn't seen The Big Sick yet I'd definitely suggest they see it. There has not been a more charming movie this year and this is arguably one of the best romantic comedies of the past few years. It arguably isn't even just a romantic comedy as it has a lot of good stand up comedy with a lot of heart.
#2- War for the Planet of the Apes
This was the first movie I ever saw at a screening and the first movie I posted a review for. This movie concludes the incredible prequel trilogy started with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. This movie isn't as action packed as the title suggests but makes up for that with boatloads of strong emotion. If all that wasn't good enough for you it also features Andy Serkis once again giving an incredible motion-capture performance as Caesar.
#1- Baby Driver
If anyone didn't know already, I'm obsessed with Baby Driver. This movie is almost too fun as we follow Baby through his heists, his relationship, and his killer tracks. Baby Driver is one of the only movies I've seen more than once this year and I'm not even sure if seeing it twice was enough. I already have the soundtrack, I'll be buying it the day it comes out on DVD, and I'll probably spend all of my free time watching it. The action is amazingly shot, the characters are very well developed, and the acting is superb. Baby Driver is my favourite movie of the summer, and the year so far.
Did I miss any movies you loved this summer? If so let me know in the comments below, and have a great Tuesday.
