The Big Sick is based on the true story of the relationship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon. Things start out with a one night stand that blossoms into a legitimate relationship, unfortunately torn apart due to Kumail's traditional Muslim background. This is a very interesting story as the film goes deep into Kumail's growing stand-up comedy career, as well as how his relationship with Emily's parents grows while she is hospitalized.
Kumail and Emily are the writers of the film which helps give the script a lot of realism. It isn't very often that as an audience we get to see a true story from the involved party's point of view and I think they did a great job. This film perfectly defines the term "dramedy." There are moments full of gut-busting laugh worthy jokes and one-liners, and many moments of heartfelt emotion. The film almost takes after the movie 50/50 in how it manages to perfectly balance comedy and drama while covering tough topics to talk about. The Big Sick addresses the struggles one faces when a family member or friend is suffering from a severe illness, as well as bringing light to the culture of Pakistani Americans. I think having Kumail co-writing was crucial in showing the audience his family's culture in a fun and humorous way. He also brings a lot of hilarious stand-up comedy scenes to the movie which build both his character and my enjoyment in the film. The story is a great one to watch unfold as the script is filled with a level of charm that causes the audience to continuously want to see where Kumail and Emily's relationship goes.
Kumail also acts in the movie as himself, and is fantastic. His comedic timing is perfect but he also manages to reach impressive levels of emotion when the story calls for it. His relationship with Zoe Kazan, the woman that plays his partner, is great as they have a very playfully fun relationship. Zoe is great as she hits comedy notes with ease and much like Kumail brings great emotion especially when it comes to the complications in the relationship due to Kumail's background. Ray Romano and Holly Hunter play Emily's parents in the film, coming in to play when Emily is in the hospital, and contribute heavily in the movie. They perfectly exemplify how parents in their situation typically act and have great chemistry with Kumail as their relationship grows. This is the perfect role for Ray Romano and he truly does an amazing job. The other key performers in the film are Kumail's stand-up buddies and his family members. His stand-up friends make some hilarious moments happen as they bring light to the relationships between comedians, filled to the brim with brilliant roasts of each other. The actors in the roles of Kumail's family are great in showing the culture in traditional Pakistani families in America.
If I had to find something about this movie that I didn't really enjoy I'd say there was a portion of time where the film dragged on a bit. For a while I was smiling at how much I was loving the movie and then I just went neutral for a bit as the pacing loses steam. This luckily doesn't last long as the emotion and comedy picks back up and continues to drive this film forward.
Overall this movie is great. As a movie nowhere near my radar I was very pleasantly surprised and would highly recommend this. If you find some time between the larger movies of this summer I would definitely suggest you check out The Bick Sick.
