Edgar Wright, the famed director behind hits such as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim vs the World, is back with what may just be an instant classic. Baby Driver follows a getaway driver named Baby who drives to pay back a debt. While at a diner he falls for a girl over her love of music and he tries to run away with her but his job gets in the way.
Edgar Wright hit it out of the park with his directing in this film. The movie uses music as a major plot element and almost every scene has large amounts of choreography. The way beats in songs mash up with even the smallest actions on screen is a marvel to watch as scenes at times seem like music videos. I honestly don't think I can stress enough how important the music in this film is. Of course a getaway driver movie with well choreographed music scenes is great, but you can't have this style of movie without some great action. But don't worry, Wright delivers some of the most well shot action scenes of the past few years. Every punch, gunshot, and squeal of tires is synced up beautifully with the music making for a more immersive and exciting time. These fun of these action scenes will have you on the edge of your seat but they are also intense enough to have you gripping the edge of your seat. This movie also does a great job of balancing different emotions throughout. There are scenes that will get you jumping with joy, some that will make you laugh hysterically, sequences that will have your heart pounding and some that might make you tear up a little bit.
At first I didn't think that there would be much of a story in this movie based on it being a getaway driver action movie, but it is surprisingly one of the most original and well thought out movies in recent memory. The dialogue for the most part isn't anything special but this is more of a show rather than tell kind of movie as most of the exposition is shown rather than told in conversations. With that in mind the story takes a lot of very unexpected turns which is always great to see in a movie. The script also does a good job of developing all of its characters well, without telling too much about them. Obviously in most cases you want to know a lot about the cast of characters but based on the criminal nature of the supporting cast it is better to know the minimum.
Ansel Elgort plays Baby and is a surprise stand out in the film. His character suffers from tinnitus and he plays that very well. Since the movie is very music based there are a lot of moments that need to be choreographed perfectly and he pulls them off seamlessly. He also brings great chemistry with all of his co-stars, especially Lily James, which greatly elevates the film. Lily James also proves her talent among the cast of veteran actors, bringing a lot of gravitas to her role. Jon Hamm is Buddy, one of the bank robbers Baby works with and brings one of his best performances. He does a great job of playing nice as well as menacing and helps give his character a fun story to follow. Jamie Foxx, Eliza Gonzalez, and Jon Bernthal also play robbers and much like Hamm bring great performances. Each one has guts and grit but also brings their own special characteristics, which round out the team well. Kevin Spacey plays the man that Baby and the gang work for and is also phenomenal. His character is similar to his character in Horrible Bosses as a leader that strikes fear with his words and persona rather than physical violence.
In case you couldn't already tell I love this movie a lot. The only issue I have is that I wish there were more car chases, but that's only because the ones that were in the movie were so incredible. This is a heart pounding action movie that manages to pack in fun, intensity, and emotion, brought out flawlessly by the incredible cast and brilliant mind behind the camera. Baby Driver is something truly special that I recommend everyone checks out. I give Baby Driver 5/5!
